What the course covers:
Within this qualification you will be introduced to the exciting and creative world of the hair and beauty sector. You will be able to research the range of training and career options.
Learn:
- How to present and maintain a professional image in the salon and how the way you communicate can impact on how your clients feel about the services you offer.
- The skills of shampooing and conditioning clients. This is a very important service as it prepares the hair for other services that follow.
- More about the different types of hair and the products that you can use.
- How to carry out basic skin care routines. You will be aware of the different products for cleansing, toning and moisturising the skin.
- How to follow safe and hygienic working practices and to communicate in a professional manner during skin care services.
- Styling women’s hair, you will need to research fashion trends and clients’ demands. You will learn about professional styling products and how to use them. You will get to know a range of hair styling terms.
- Plaiting and twisting hair provides you with the change to show off your creative skills, as well as how well you can work with your hands. You’ll learn how to section and secure the hair, and how to use a range of decorations. You will learn about how to twist and style hair and use different techniques to secure the hair in place. You will also learn how to provide after-care advice.
- Basic makeup application – will help you to develop your artistic and creative skills by learning how to carry out makeup services. You will learn how to cleanse, tone and moisturise before the face is made up. You will learn how to use different products and tools and also cover the functions and basic structure of the skin and facial bones.
- Providing basic manicure provides you with the knowledge surrounding different products and equipment, as well the techniques and procedure to complete this service.
- Creating a hair and beauty image is where you can use your creative flair to develop and produce a selected image or theme. You will use a wide range of methods to plan and create the image.
- At all times you will be following health and safety within the salon, you will learn about PPE, Ridor, COSHH and risks and hazards within the salon.
Throughout the training you will be working with other people in the salon, developing good working relationships, working as part of a team and learning how you can support others.
Placement Requirements:
We will work with you to identify a work placement opportunity, which will help you gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected in the hair and beauty sector.
How you will be assessed:
You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include work products, posters, displays, assignments, observations, workbooks, a portfolio of evidence, practical, scenarios and case studies, role play and placement feedback.
How long does it take to complete?
This qualification can be completed within 1 year.
What related qualifications can you progress to?
Upon achievement, this qualification enables students to progress onto a Level 2 Hair VRQ pathway, a Level 2 Beauty VRQ pathway, or apply for an NVQ or an Apprenticeship to gain the practical assessment information.
